Chainsaws, firewood and stoves

The last few warm days of autumn have passed and cold weather is now setting in. The forecast predicts negative temperatures starting tomorrow night and we already had a few morning with most of our yard covered in hoarfrost. A few weeks before moving to our new house, back when we were still renting our old apartment and we were just starting the house renovations, we were on our way from the city to our homestead. With music roaring in our car, I was slowly driving on the country road that leads to our Read More

Our first apple harvest

The last few weeks have been crazy busy. We spent our weekends working in the kitchen and juggled with shopping and doctor appointments throughout the rest of the week. Autumn came in full force here at Vechea and hit us with a few nights of 1°C temperatures, light rain and winds. That was also our Read More

We finally started working on our garden

When we got this land, the first thing we wanted to do was to start a nice, small vegetable garden. Unfortunately, the buying process dragged on for longer than what we expected and by the time we got our keys and deeds it was already late April and we were already passed the growing season.

With a bitter taste in our mouths, we were forced to postpone all our gardening plans and start renovations on our house. We needed to get our house in move-in condition as fast as possible because we didn’t want to pay both our house mortgage and a rent in the city.

running water connected faucet

We got the water connected to our new house

This past Friday we passed another deadline that was looming over our heads. We finally managed to get the water connected to our old house, getting us one step closer to finishing our house renovations.

It’s hard to put into words and explain just how happy we are to have running water, hot showers and to be able to flush the toilet. But to put it into perspective, we spend most of our Friday afternoon just flushing the water and watching it go down the drain.

Deadline frenzy on our house renovation

The past few weeks were hectic here at the Valhalla Homestead. Our lease was only until the 29th of June so we needed to wrap up the house renovation as quickly as possible and move all our stuff from the old apartment we used to rent. Hence the reason why I didn’t have the time to update you all on our progress.

Although we carefully planned our house renovation and moving schedules there were a few unexpected delays. We ended up working long hours and stripped of any free time. So we ended up spending our two weeks of “vacation” among piles of rubble, dust and concrete.

Out with the old – Cleaning the old house

When we first got here at Vechea we already knew that there was a lot of work ahead of us. The old house is structurally sound as far as we know. But it was far away from what we would consider nice and comfortable. One of the first things we had to tackle was getting rid of the old stuff that was left behind.

The old house was built 50 years ago and I bet that the furniture inside is just as old. The floors were covered with old dirty rugs that smelled like mildew. Also, nobody lived inside the house for the past 18 years so the air inside smelled bad and stale.

Lost in Valhalla Homestead

Where Is The Valhalla Homestead?

Today I want to give you more details about where we are, here at the Valhalla Homestead. So if you’re just getting to know us and you want to figure out what’s our story setting, read on.

As I told you before, Greti and I are the proud owners of a beautiful countryside property we purchased at the beginning of 2018. After we figured out that we were not excited at all for the hustle and bustle of the city life and that what we really wanted was a better, more peaceful and healthier lifestyle we decided to buy a land nearby Cluj. That’s how we got to Vechea and started our homestead adventure.
